Therapy services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Please contact your insurance provider directly to determine your therapy services carefully by asking the following questions:
- Do I have OUTPATIENT mental health insurance benefits?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- Is approval required from my primary care physician?
It is your responsibility to contact your insurance provider before booking your appointment by calling the customer service number on the back of the insurance card (5 in the photo below) and asking about your mental health benefits.
In some cases, paying out-of-pocket or “private pay” may be less expensive than your insurance rates.
How to Read Your Insurance Card

1. Your Member ID Number
You’ll need this information when receiving medical services at the doctor or pharmacy, or when calling customer service for assistance.
2. Your Plan Type
If you aren’t sure what type of health insurance plan you have, you can find out on the upper right corner of your ID card. The type of plan you have can affect what providers are in-network.
3. Your Costs
Your co-pays are printed on the front right side of your card so that you know what to expect upon your next visit. Your ID card may also include your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.
- A co-pay is a fixed amount you pay for a covered health care service
- A deductible is the amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay
- Coinsurance is the percentage of costs you pay after you’ve paid your deductible
- The out-of-pocket maximum is the upper limit on the amount of money you will pay for healthcare services in a plan year
4. Pharmacy Coverage
If you have pharmacy benefits through your insurance, the back of your ID card will have Rx printed on the bottom.
- Your RX Group is used by your pharmacy to process your prescription benefit
- Your BIN or bank identification number tells your pharmacy what insurance you are covered by
5. Contact Information
The back of your ID card provides important contact information for customer and provider service.
Note: This is a sample ID card. Cards may vary from insurance to insurance.
Insurance & Therapy Cost FAQs
Do you accept insurance for counseling services?
Mind & Body Counseling Associates works with several major insurance providers to help make therapy more accessible. Since coverage can vary by plan and provider, we recommend contacting our office or your insurance company directly to verify that we are in-network for your specific policy.
How can I find out if my insurance covers therapy?
To determine your coverage, you can call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask about your “outpatient mental health benefits.” Be sure to inquire about your specific co-pay, whether you have a deductible to meet, and if there are any limits on the number of sessions covered per year.
What if my insurance is out-of-network?
If we do not accept your specific insurance, you may still be able to utilize out-of-network benefits depending on your plan. Many insurance companies will reimburse a portion of your therapy costs after you submit a “superbill,” which Mind & Body Counseling Associates can provide for you upon request.
How much does therapy cost without insurance?
For those without insurance, our therapy rates vary by service and the specific clinician you see. Please contact our office directly for our current private pay rate schedule and to discuss which payment options best fit your budget.
What payment methods do you accept?
Mind & Body accepts a variety of payment methods, including major credit and debit cards. We also welcome the use of Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), allowing you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for your mental health care.
Do I need a referral to start therapy?
In most cases, you can schedule an appointment at Mind & Body directly without a referral from a primary care doctor. However, some specific insurance plans (such as certain HMOs) may require a referral for coverage to apply, so it is always wise to check your plan’s requirements first.
How often will I attend therapy sessions?
The frequency of your sessions at Mind & Body Counseling Associates is tailored to your unique needs and therapeutic goals. While many clients find it most helpful to meet weekly or biweekly at the start, you and your therapist will collaborate to decide on a schedule that best supports your progress.
What happens during the first therapy session?
Your initial session is a supportive space designed for you and your therapist to get to know one another and discuss your primary concerns. We will focus on gathering your history, identifying your treatment goals, and beginning to develop a personalized plan for your healing journey.
How can I schedule an appointment at Mind & Body Counseling Associates?
Scheduling an appointment is simple and can be done by calling our office directly or by completing a contact form. Our team will guide you through the intake process and help match you with a provider who is a good fit for your specific needs.
